Have you ever wondered which country is really the largest C02 producer (per capita)? (Hint: It's not China or the US) Or maybe you're curoius about how the famous gap between the rich and the poor has changed over time. Well, the people at
GapMinder.org have created a fantastic interface to the oodles of data lying around in publicly available (and reputable) databases. I recommend watching the TED talk to see the amazing animated graphs you can create with this data and then playing around with their graphing application (on the top right and the top left of the home page, respectively).

Here's an interesting map from the LA times showing how California counties voted for president and our propositions:

One more year into the books for me! The exciting news for this year is that my brother came to visit (thanks Adam, you rock!) and a bunch of us from the CSE department went to see a baseball game - complete with fireworks! It's actually been a weekend of partying with the department kick-off event and the presidential debate on Friday, my birthday on Saturday, and today a belated birthday party for Anne. (Happy Birthday Anne!) Don't worry, profs, I'm fitting in some research and homework time too :)
Anyway, it's turning out to be a fun weekend and I've got week of excitement to look forward to as well, with the
Grace Hopper Conference starting on Wednesday. As for my birthday - thanks everyone for making it such a happy, memorable day!

To continue the theme of survey data mapped accross the US, here's a
map about our personalities.
Today marks the last day of my summer freedom - which has included lots of research, several trips to the zoo and wild animal park and trying some new recepies. But I am looking forward to the new quarter. I get to fill in the gaps in my knowledge about operating systems, learn more about storage systems and focus how to be an effective TA.
I do have some pretty unique non-academic thing on my horizon too. First Adam's flying in tomorrow to help celebrate our birthdays :) Shortly thereafter I'll be headed to Denver for the Grace Hopper Conference (enter nervous excitement). And then in October Adrian and I will be going to meet his Granny - first time for me, and I look forward to meeting this very nice lady.

Ever wonder about
the answer to the age old question?

It's been over a year since I last posted, so it's high time I sent you all an update. What an eventful year, I hardly know where to begin! As you probably know, I chose to attend UC San Diego and am 2.5 short weeks from finishing my third quarter. My days have been filled with various courses and research - especially the last few months with a major paper deadline scheduled last week.
However, I have managed to get out and see a bit of San Diego, as well. Earlier this year, Adrian and I went to the Wild Animal Park to see the 7 new lion cubs. They were asleep, of course, but still pretty impressive (each was only a few months old, but already the size of a golden retreiver!). While there, we also got to see a baby girraff that had only been on exhibit for a day or two. (Did you know those critters are 6 feet tall at birth?)
On our walks to and from school, we also get to see (and hear) some of the less exotic creatures. Most of the time it's just lizzards (and frogs), but recently we've seen some baby squirrels scampering around near the baseball field. And just today, we saw a baby bunny munching on grass right outside the cse building. Pretty cute little critters - exactly like their older counterparts, but in miniature!

I’ve decided to follow in the footsteps of Adam and Adrian by starting a blog to stay in touch with family and friends when I leave my home town for a few years. And what better time to startup a blog than when the good news begins to show up in the mail? But I’m getting ahead of myself…
As many of you know I submitted applications to Ph.D. programs of nine schools in December and January. Which ones? CalTech, Carnegie Mellon University, MIT, Stanford, UC Berkley, UC San Diego, The University of Michigan, The University of Washington and The University of Wisconsin. So, for about two months I’ve been excitedly waiting to hear where I might be for the next five to seven years. But this period of angst seems to be drawing to a close – I’m starting to hear back! What’s even better is that two of the three schools I’ve heard from are offering me admission as well as a chance to visit their schools at the end of this quarter. Grad school, here I come!
Life outside of academics is going well, too. My roller skating skills seem to be improving, as does the bruise on my hip from falling last time I was on wheels. This last Friday was awesome; once the large group of girls dressed up in 80s-style jumpsuits, miniskirts and wide-necked shirts headed out, the remaining skaters were sparse – perfect conditions for practicing my moves!
